7 March 2010–3rd Sunday in Lent

Hello! We apologize for not getting a post up last week…sometimes life happens and the blog has to wait. But we are still going strong at Deer Creek Charge…worshipping and praising God! We’re also beginning dialogues on how to expand our witness in our communities, make disciples, and possibly re-design our worship services. We are going to be entering into discussions on what it means to “worship,” what elements HAVE to be in “worship,” and what else we’d like to add/subtract so that we can more fully worship “in spirit and in truth.” We’ve recommitted ourselves to praying for our churches and our pastors, as well as visiting our homebound members. It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Deer Creek Charge! Won’t you come join us and enter in on these holy conversations?

This Sunday, we’ll be looking at Luke 13:1-9. The first part of the passage deals with the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?” We’ll be exploring what Jesus has to say about this…(HINT: It’s NOT what you would expect!). The second part of the passage is a parable that is familiar to many people–the fig tree and what it means to “bear good fruit.” We’ll be looking at what that means within each individual congregation…and it’s not the same for both churches…just like it’s not the same for two individual people. Two different sermons this week…one for each congregation…both with the title, “Turning Bad Apples into Good Fruit.”

We’ll be singing a familiar hymn or two, have the opportunity to hear the choir, and…Great News!!! It’s communion Sunday! Woohoo! My favorite Sunday of the month! We will be able to gather around the Lord’s Table–ALL are welcome to join in community with us as we remember the sacrifice of Christ in a tangible way. Check out what we think about communion here.

There’s not a whole lot of stuff going on announcement-wise this week…there is a way to donate to relief efforts in Chile. Check out the info below. Also…yummy church dinners are coming up! See what is going on!

Next weekend, March 13-14, begins daylight savings time. Please make sure to set your clocks forward one hour before going to bed on Saturday night, so that we can all gather together for worship on Sunday morning!

A St. Patrick’s Day Dinner will be held on Wednesday, March 17, 5-7pm. Join us to celebrate this holiday that started in the Church and spread throughout our culture. Don’t forget to wear green! Location: Mt. Tabor.

It’s not too late to join the Genesis Bible Study! Join us on Wednesdays from 11am-12 noon. Cost: $10, for participant book. Location: Sunday School Room, Deer Creek.

Summer Camp is coming up! There are camps for all ages (even adults!) and family camps. See a brochure, go online to or talk to Bonnie if you are interested. Scholarships are available. Discounts for campers who have family volunteer as a counselor for any age. Could we get a volunteer team together for the first week in August? Talk to Bonnie ASAP if you are interested.

Disaster Relief: Donations for Chile: UMCOR Advance—Chilean Emergency, Advance #3021178. Donations for Haiti: Haiti Emergency, Advance #418325. Donate online by going to and clicking on the appropriate link. Or, you can write a check to “Conference Treasurer,” noting either emergency in the memo line as well as our church. The check can be placed in the offering plate. UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, is the humanitarian arm of the UMC. 100% of donations go to those in need.

Come and join us for any or all of our activities and events! We can’t wait to see what God has in store for us together! Let’s journey together towards bearing good fruit for the Kingdom of God! See you at the Creek!
