5th Sunday of Lent–21 March 2010

Hi There!

Sorry for a late post…but it has been a busy week at the Creek! This week, one of our oldest and longest members passed away. We were able to gather in community to celebrate the life of this man who lived his life as an example to us all…he was truly a man of faith. As a result, everything else got pushed back a bit…but nevertheless, here we are!

We hope that you will join us for worship this Sunday! Last week we talked about how we can be like the Prodigal Father (nope…not a typo! The father lavished his love on his son!), by lavishing our love on everyone we meet. We also want to model our ministry after the father in the story who ran to meet his son! We too can run to meet those in the world around us and bring them into a closer relationship with Christ by enveloping them in love and fellowship within our congregation. This week, we continue this discussion with a look at how Mary washed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume (John 12:1-8) and how this was radical and counter-cultural! We too can be radical and counter-cultural in spreading the Gospel message. Last week, the pastor gave us a homework assignment to bring back an idea of a way that our churches could partner with other churches, community or government agencies, or meet a need in our communities ourselves so that we can run to meet people where they are. We’ll be talking about our ideas and starting this discussion today! Join us as we embark on this grand adventure of becoming better disciples of Jesus Christ!

It’s still not too late to join our Genesis Bible Study on Wednesday mornings at 11am in the Sunday School room of Deer Creek! Come as you are! Also…if you have any suggestions for another day, time, and/or study topic that you would like to have, we are starting to think about what will come next. We’ll probably take a short break between studies, and then kick-off a new study mid-May! Suggest something, or stay tuned for details!

Also…next week kicks off Holy Week…we’ll be having “special” services during that week…we hope you can join us! Check the announcements below for dates, times and locations! This is a great time to check out Deer Creek Charge! We can’t wait to share the good news that Christ is Alive!

TODAY, after worship at Mt. Tabor, there will be a brief Church Council meeting to review our progress on our goals. Also, there will be 3rd Sunday Refreshments in the fellowship hall. Please join us! Location: Mt. Tabor.

A Palm Sunday Dinner will be held on Sunday, March 28 at 5pm. The menu includes soup and sandwiches. Join us for this meal organized by the UMW of Deer Creek. Please bring a dessert, the women are taking care of the rest! Location: Deer Creek.

Holy Week Services are as follows: Palm Sunday: Regular services (9 & 11am); Holy (Maundy) Thursday: 7pm, Mt. Tabor; Good Friday: 7pm, Deer Creek; Easter: Regular Services (9 & 11am).

On Easter Sunday, (2 weeks from today!), please bring fresh flowers to decorate the altar. Location: Deer Creek.

Help the Sunday School! Bring juice boxes or a small snack (like animal crackers) to church for our youngest disciples. Location: Deer Creek.

We are still looking for several more people who are willing to be part of a care/visitation ministry to our homebound members at Mt. Tabor. This would include serving them communion. Training will be provided. We are also looking for people interested in being a regular or substitute greeter, usher, or reader for worship. Please see Bonnie with any questions or to sign up.

Summer Camp is coming up! There are camps for all ages (even adults!) and family camps. See a brochure, go online to or talk to Bonnie if you are interested. Scholarships are available. Discounts for campers who have family volunteer as a counselor for any age.
