Ye who are weary, Come Home…Sunday, 19 September 2010

NOTE: DEER CREEK UMC WILL NOT BE HAVING A WORSHIP SERVICE ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH. PLEASE JOIN OUR SISTER CONGREGATION, MT. TABOR (RTE. 1, NORTH OF BEL AIR) FOR WORSHIP AND A POTLUCK. WORSHIP AT DEER CREEK WILL RESUME AT 9AM ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26TH.

“Come Home! Come Home! Ye who are weary, come home. Earnestly, Tenderly, Jesus is calling, calling, O Sinner, come home!” Do you recognize this phrase? It’s the refrain from an “oldie, but goodie” hymn, “Softly and Tenderly Jesus is Calling” which was written by Will L. Thompson in 1880. This great hymn invites all those who have strayed from God to return home–to God’s loving embrace. What a joy it is to come home to God!

This Sunday, we also invite you to “come home”–to Mt. Tabor, that is! We are marking 147 years of ministry in Harford County at the same location as we began! What a joy! It should be a day filled with fun, excitement, friends–old and new–and inspiring messages. Below is an excerpt from a letter that the church mailed out to invite folks to Homecoming 2010:

Since arriving at Mt. Tabor UMC, I have heard almost non-stop chatter about the annual Homecoming celebration! I am looking forward to this much-loved event and getting to know all of our longtime friends and members. We will be welcoming Rev. Dr. Karin Walker, as our guest speaker for the morning service. Rev. Dr. Walker is the District Superintendent for the Baltimore-Suburban District of the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. The Mt. Tabor choir and vocalist Caitlin Katrinic, Pat Raab’s granddaughter, will be providing the music for the day.

There will be a potluck luncheon in the fellowship hall immediately following the service as we continue to reminisce and renew friendships. Please bring a dish to share!

We hope that you and your family will come home to Mt. Tabor on Sunday, September 19th! You are always welcome here!

The title of Rev. Dr. Walker’s sermon is “Responding in Faithfulness” and is based off of Mark 10:46-52–the story of Blind Bartimaeus. Psalm 30 will also be read. Hymns–“Oldies, but goodies” will be sung by the Mt. Tabor Choir, and Caitlin Katrinic will provide some vocal solos to add to the excitement of the day! There will be Children’s Worship Bulletins available for those young or young at heart; in addition to a children’s message. Please contact us if you have any questions! We hope to see you at God’s home on Sunday!
