Grace House–Sunday, 31 October 2010

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by Deer Creek Charge…well, our online presence, anyway! We’re so glad to see you! This week, we are so excited by all the wonderful things going on around the Deer Creek Charge! God is alive and present! Won’t you join God and the Deer Creek Charge in mission and ministry to all the world…but especially those who are least, the last, the lost, the ill, the imprisoned, the marginalized in all forms? We are called to be Christ’s hands and feet on this earth…and we have a place for you to be part of this mission with the world.

This Sunday, we are looking at Luke 19:1-10 which is the story of Zacchaeus…you know, the one made famous by the children’s song that begins, “Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he. He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see…” What is beautiful about this passage is that it is not a story about Zacchaeus at all…it is a story about God, God’s love for all of humanity, and God’s work on earth through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is a story about God seeking out the least, the last. the lost…the marginalized before the marginalized seek God. God shows us love and mercy even before we know God–God did it with Zacchaeus and God will do it with you! (In Wesleyan/United Methodist terms, we call this part about God seeking us “prevenient grace”…if you want to know more about this, join us in worship or check out this link).

Also this Sunday, we have a very special children’s message for our youngest disciples! In honor of Halloween, we will be learning a Pumpkin Prayer as we each take turns poking out the features on the jack-o-lantern! The prayer is printed below for your reference.

Pumpkin Prayer
Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you and the world you created. (Remove the top of the pumpkin).
Remove the things in my life that don’t please you. Forgive the wrong things I do and help me to forgive others. (Pull out the bag of seeds).
Open my eyes to see the love and beauty in the world around me. (Remove the heart-shaped eyes).
Open my ears when I hear your word, so I may learn how you want me to live. (Remove the Bible-shaped ears).
I’m sorry for the times I’ve turned up my nose at people who are different from me, but who are your children, too. (Remove the cross-shaped nose).
Let everything I say please you. (Remove the fish-shaped mouth).
Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do. (Place a candle inside and light it).

All Saints Sunday will be observed next week. If you have a friend or family member that has passed away since November of 2009, and you would like their name to be read on that Sunday, please PRINT their name LEGIBLY on the list TODAY.

Next Sunday, we fall back one hour to Eastern Standard Time from Daylight Savings Time. Make sure to change your clock, or you will be an hour early to church!

Deer Creek will hold an interest meeting on TOMORROW at 7pm to plan for collecting food for our sponsored family for Thanksgiving at Christmas. We would need people to organize the collection (gather plastic bags and staple notes), distribute the bags door-to-door, and then go back later to collect the bags. If you are interested in helping with any of these things, but cannot make the meeting, contact Cheryl or Bonnie. Our family is a mom; a son, Dometrius (6, almost 7); and a daughter, Tatiana (3 mo.).

Please bring in ready-to-eat food for our unhoused neighbors. We have plenty of utensils. Need ideas? Talk to Tracy. Location: Mt. Tabor.

A Nominations Committee Meeting will be held on Monday, November 8 at 7pm for BOTH CHURCHES. Not sure if you are on the committee? Check the posted list or ask Bonnie. Please bring your ideas with you. Location: Mt. Tabor.

A P/SPRC Meeting will be held on Monday, November 22 at 7pm for BOTH CHURCHES. This will be to go over the pastoral end-of-the-year evaluation. Location: Deer Creek.

A VERY SHORT Bible Study on Psalms will be offered during Advent (starting the week of November 28). We will meet for 4 weeks and look at 4 different Psalms for 1 hour. This will be a creative and reflective time. There will be no preparation, homework or workbook. Come for one or all four of the sessions. We’ll start with Psalm 1 and end with Psalm 150. Let Bonnie know you are interested. Possible meeting times include Mondays (day or evening), Fridays (late morning), or Sundays before/after worship. Location TBD.

An Advent Celebration will be held on December 12th at 5pm. The Women’s Circle will provide hors d’oeuvres and beverages.  Please bring a dessert.  If you would like to participate in a gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift costing $5 or less.  A hymn sing is planned.  Come one and all and make merry (please invite family and friends)! Location: Deer Creek.
