Signs From God–Sunday, 19 December 2010

Hi there, Deer Creek Charge blog readers! We’re glad you stopped by! We are busy and ready to enter the 4th week of Advent, of time spent preparing for the arrival of the baby Jesus. And we are in full-gear preparing for Christmas Eve worship too! We hope that you will join us. (See Announcements, below, for details). Last week at Deer Creek we had an Advent Party and greening of the sanctuary. It was wonderful, although the weather did put a bit of a damper on a few folks turning out. This week, Deer Creek will be delivering food and gifts to our adopted family for Christmas! There is still time to donate money to purchase the perishable items for the family (we have all the non-perishables and gifts we need). At Mt. Tabor this week, we will be having the Christmas Potluck and cookie exchange! Please join us after worship for this fun tradition!

This Sunday, our sermon is titled “Signs From God” and is based on Isaiah 7:10-16 and Matthew 1:18-25. We will be wrapping up our Advent preaching theme of looking at the prophecies in Isaiah that predict the coming of the Messiah (Jesus Christ). This week, we get to hear about that baby arriving! The Matthew story of Jesus’ birth is told from the perspective of Joseph; whereas the Luke 2 story is told from the perspective of Mary–this is the one we’ll be using on Christmas Eve.

As you continue to make preparations for Christmas and New Year’s, don’t forget to take time to rest, rejuvenate and reconnect with God. You’ll be glad you did! May your time this holiday season be filled with joy and love. We at the Deer Creek Charge would like to help you discover what that means and looks like from a faith-based perspective. Come join us and see what a difference making God a priority in your life can be!

Announcements:

3rd Sunday Christmas Potluck will be held TODAY. There will also be a cookie exchange. Please bring in your home-baked cookies to share. We want to deliver some extras to shut-ins if you have a few cookies to spare. Location: Mt. Tabor.

Board of Childcare Red Stockings are DUE TODAY. This goes to funding much-needed programs for children who are in the UMC-sponsored group homes and foster homes. Location: Deer Creek and Mt. Tabor.

If anyone is interested in being a greeter (2) or scripture reader (at least 1) for Christmas Eve, please let Bonnie know TODAY. Greeters need to arrive by 6:25pm.

The Deborah Circle of the UMW is requesting donations to the Magic Jar on December 5, 12 and 19th. The donations will be used to purchase clothes for the school nurses at both Hickory and Forest Hill Elementary Schools. Please contact Pat or Nancy with questions. Location: Mt. Tabor.

Mark your calendars! A combined Christmas Eve Worship service will be held on Friday, December 24th at 7pm at Deer Creek. This will be a candlelight family service and will include a children’s message. There will not be Sunday School for the children, but the service has been designed with them in mind. Bring your family and join us for a celebration! (“Regular” worship will resume at both churches on Sunday, December 26th).

Thank you all for the Christmas cards and warm wishes this season! I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and blessings in the new year! May you feel God’s peace in your life. Always, Bonnie.

Worship Fun Fact!

Today is the fourth Sunday in Advent. The Advent wreath is a simple circle of evergreen branches, a sign of life without end. Each Sunday one additional candle is lit, until all four are lit. On Christmas (or in our case, Christmas Eve), the central, white, Christ candle is lit. Also using “greens” in the sanctuary is the Chrismon Tree, a sign begun in the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, VA. This tree is covered with signs of Christ, like stars, doves, the “Chi Rho” and more. Check your announcements during Advent for a weekly “Worship Fun Fact.”
