Come and See!–Sunday, 16 January 2011

Hello, and thanks for checking us out in our online presence! We’re so glad you did! Last week during worship folks were invited to take a shell home with them to remind them that they are part of God’s family. You were encouraged to take an extra shell or two so that you could give them to someone else when you told them how much God loves them and that they are also part of the family. This week, we’re starting that “how to” process. How do we go up to someone and say, “Let me tell you about my faith”? Well, it all starts with an invitation…“Come and see.” Come and see what I’m so excited about! Come and see how God has changed my life! Come and see what it is like to live in a Christian community! Come and see! This week, you are invited to “come and see” why we in the Deer Creek Charge are so excited about what God is doing in the life of our community! You are invited to come and journey with us as we learn and sort out what it means to be followers of Jesus. We can’t promise that we always know what we are doing, or that you will like what you see (following Jesus isn’t always pleasant). But we can promise that it will be worth it in the long run…a relationship with Christ is never useless.

In today’s scripture passage (John 1:29-42), Jesus made the invitation to Andrew, John the Baptist, John—“the disciple whom Jesus loved,” Peter, and others. Jesus is making that invitation to us too. Come and see what being a real follower of Jesus is all about. It’s an invitation. You can accept it or decline it. And if you don’t like what you see when you get there, you can leave early. We said “yes” to Jesus’ invitation to “come and see.” Now We’re telling you about it in hopes that you will also come on this grand adventure and journey…and bring someone else along with you. Come and See.

TODAY is 3rd Sunday Fellowship! Join us after worship for a time of soup, sandwiches, desserts, and fellowship. All are welcome. Location: Mt. Tabor.

Please make sure you bring in your food donations for the Mason-Dixon Community Services pantry. We are trying to take another donation to them soon. Location: Mt. Tabor.

Are you interested in becoming a member at either Deer Creek or Mt. Tabor? Please talk to Bonnie and strongly consider taking the new class (below).

Want a refresher course on what it means to be a Christian (and specifically a United Methodist)? Bonnie will be offering a new class that covers the basics of Christian and United Methodist beliefs, history and what it means for us today. There is a possibility of offering it at two separate times if there is enough interest. There will be some reading, homework and a fieldtrip. Possible days/times include Mondays or Tuesdays (day or evening) or Sundays at noon starting in late February. The class will run for 10 weeks, and there will be a small charge for the book (exact cost TBD). Place your name on the sign-up sheet if interested.

Worship Fun Fact!

Today is the Second Sunday after Epiphany (NOT the Second Sunday of Epiphany). In the United Methodist Church we observe a season of “Ordinary Time”—meaning that these Sundays between the Advent-Christmas-Epiphany and the Lent-Easter-Pentecost cycles are numbered using “ordinal” (counting) numbers. There is no central theme for this time period.
