God Bless You–Sunday, 30 January 2011

Welcome! Cold and flu season is upon us! Coughs, fevers and sneezes are everywhere! When people sneeze, we have a common reaction. We say “God bless you.” We don’t even really think about it—we say it because we have been trained to do so; it is the “right” thing to do. It’s part of “good manners.” But do you know why or how this idea of saying “God bless you” when someone sneezes originated? Well, we at the Deer Creek Charge looked it up. And the short version is that no one knows. Some people speculate that it began as a way to protect people from evil spirits or the devil since people might have believed that your soul left your body when you sneezed. Others suggest that it was a way of offering a person a blessing in case they were about to die—either because they thought your heart stopped beating when you sneeze—it doesn’t—or because sneezing is a sign that you are sick and will soon be dead. We know in some Spanish-speaking cultures the more you sneeze the better luck you are supposed to have. The fact of the matter is this—we go around blessing people all the time and have no idea why.

Come out and join the Deer Creek Charge this week for worship and find out why God wants to bless you and how you can be a blessing to others! Check out Matthew 5:1-12 which kicks off Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” (Luke’s version is called the “Sermon on the Plain” and is found in Luke 6) if you want a quick preview of this week’s scripture. We are ready and waiting for you. God is waiting…why are you keeping God on hold while you go about your daily life? Join us and make a commitment to live as Christ would have you live. You are always welcome…no perfect people allowed!

Thanks to all who helped with all aspects of Jane’s service of death and resurrection. The family was very appreciative.

If you would like a copy of the final statistical report, please see Bonnie. Thanks for your help in filling them out!

Are you interested in becoming a member at either Deer Creek or Mt. Tabor? Please talk to Bonnie and strongly consider taking the new class (below).

Want a refresher course on what it means to be a Christian (and specifically a United Methodist)? Bonnie will be offering a new class that covers the basics of Christian and United Methodist beliefs, history and what it means for us today. (Think of it as an “Adult Confirmation” class). There is a possibility of offering it at two separate times if there is enough interest. There will be some reading, homework and a fieldtrip. Possible days/times include Mondays or Tuesdays (day or evening) or Sundays at noon starting in late February. The class will run for 10 weeks, and there will be a small charge for the book ($10 used, $15 new). Financial assistance is available. Place your name on the sign-up sheet if interested. Deadline to sign up: NEXT SUNDAY. Class will begin the following week.

 Worship Fun Fact!

Starting this Sunday (and continuing through February) we will be looking at Matthew’s version of the “Sermon on the Mount.” There is a similar version in the Gospel of Luke, but it is called the “Sermon on the Plain.” Check this week’s section (the Beatitudes) out in Luke 6:20-23. “Beatitudes” means “blessings.”
