To Be Continued…The Path (Sunday, 13 March 2011)

Welcome back to the Deer Creek Charge! Thanks for stopping by. We have lots of things going on right now, so be sure to look around a bit and check out the announcements at the bottom of the page! (And of course, if you are reading this on Saturday night, don’t forget to “spring forward” and set your clocks ahead by one hour tonight so that you don’t miss worship in the morning!) Highlights include advertising for a musician for Deer Creek, our upcoming fellowship meals and our Lenten/Holy Week/Easter worship schedule. You can find links for all of these posts on the home page.

In worship this Sunday, we are exploring temptation. What a tempting thought! Seriously, though, we are looking at a couple of passages (Genesis 2:15-17, and 3:1-7; Matthew 4:1-11) and comparing the differences from when Adam/Eve were tempted in the garden to when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. So it doesn’t sound very exciting at the moment, but we promise you, the message for tomorrow’s worship is organic, real, and applicable to everyday life. (The unofficial sermon review committee gave it 4 out of 4 crosses when rating it!) Besides, if this isn’t enough to tempt you to come out and join us, there might be chocolate chip cookies! (Is this a temptation or a bribe?? Hmmm…) And yes, they also work into the message. The point is, you and your family are ALWAYS welcome to join us! Sunday School at Deer Creek, Children’s bulletins/message available at both Deer Creek and Mt. Tabor. We are ready and waiting for you to join us! We’re changing the world…one person at a time. Come help us…no matter where you are spiritually (exploring, convinced, doubting, confused, firm, radiating, etc.) we have a place for you.

This Sunday is our First Sunday in Lent (the 40 day period of time, excluding Sundays, before Easter where we work on getting ourselves into a “right relationship” with God. If you’re not sure how or why we need to do this, come talk to us…we LOVE these questions!). For each Sunday in Lent, the sermon title will begin with the phrase, “to be continued…” followed by the rest of the title. The reason for this is because we are all still “in progress” learning what it means to be a “Christian” in this world. Our stories are still being written and will be “continued…” Curious? Want to learn more? Join us over the next 6 weeks as we journey through this amazing process of being formed and shaped by God!

Bible Study on what it means to be a United Methodist continues after worship at Mt. Tabor and on Monday mornings at 11am at Deer Creek. Send us a message if you have any questions…hope to see you there!

Announcements:

The annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner will be on THURSDAY (March 17). Join us from 5-7pm for a fare of corned beef, cabbage, ham and potatoes as we celebrate the “luck o’ the Irish!” Location: Mt. Tabor.

Note: There will be NO 3rd SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP after worship next week.

Lectors (Scripture Readers) are needed at Deer Creek. You don’t have to be a “perfect” reader—the scripture is provided for you months in advance, so you can practice. Training can be provided. Sign up on the clipboard. Please consider serving God in this way.

Join us for a Soup & Sandwich Lenten Dinner hosted by the Women’s Circle at Deer Creek! A variety of soups, sandwiches and desserts will be served. Time TBD (early evening), Sunday, March 27. Location: Deer Creek.

There is an on-going calendar for sign-ups to help with Centre UMC’s food pantry, so that we don’t overwhelm them with volunteers. Sign up once, or once per month! We’ve already sent several people. Can’t make it out? Food items that are especially needed are: baked beans, cereal, canned fruit, spaghetti/sauce, “goodies” (cookies, pudding, brownies, etc.). Location: Deer Creek.

The money donated to the Magic Jar this month will go to help provide gift cards for replacement blinds at the women and children’s shelter, Susannah Wesley House, in Baltimore. This is a mission of the Deborah Circle of the UMW. Talk to Nancy with questions. Brochures are available next to the jar. Location: Mt. Tabor.

We are still looking for someone to play piano and/or organ either permanently or temporarily at Deer Creek. Please talk to folks you know. A small stipend is available.

Worship Fun Fact!

This is the first Sunday of Lent. Lent is a season in the church year that lasts for 40 days (not counting Sundays). The word Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means “spring.”
