To Be Continued…Food For Thought (Sunday, 27 March 2011)

Thanks for stopping by the Deer Creek Charge! It’s always a joy to have you here! With cold and flu season wrapping up, and spring here (well, except for that late season snow shower they are calling for tonight…but we’ll be open in the morning!), I’m starting to think about summer! I can’t wait to go to summer camp! Check it out here. We’d LOVE to see you!! But summer time also means that it gets hot…and when it gets hot, I get thirsty…how about you? I drink a LOT of water in the summer! But sometimes, water just doesn’t do the trick…I need something more…there’s a part of me that is yearning for something deeper, something regular water can’t quench. Have you ever felt this way?

Well, the good news is, we are talking about this very topic in worship this week! Our scripture is John 4:1-42, which is about this Samaritan woman (think “the other”) who is at a well when Jesus happens to stop by. There’s all kinds of social and religous taboos that we’ll unpack, but to make a looong story short(er), Jesus offers her “living water,” which turns out to be a relationship with Jesus and God. It’s something you can’t live without…just like water. We’re also going to explore how to “tap” into that well of strength from God when things get tough and how to tell others about our experiences. Come on out as we continue this Lenten journey and go home with some “food for thought” (as well as a bottle of water to give to someone else who could use some “living water” in their life!)

It’s a jam-packed week here at the Charge! Won’t you be part of it? If you can’t make it out for Sunday morning, think about joining us Sunday evening for a Soup/Sandwich fellowship meal (see below for details). Also, several meetings are coming up on Monday night…if you are on a committee, please be sure to be there! Have a wonderful and blessed week! See you around town!

Soup & Sandwich Lenten Dinner hosted by the Women’s Circle at Deer Creek—TODAY, 5pm. A variety of soups, sandwiches and desserts will be served. A freewill offering will be collected and the money donated to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to go towards the disaster in Japan. Location: Deer Creek.

There will be a SHORT combined SPPRC Meeting TOMORROW (Monday) at 7pm to hire an accompanist for Deer Creek. Remember, only the current members of the committee are allowed to attend. Location: Deer Creek.

Deer Creek Church Council will meet TOMORROW (Monday) at 7:30pm to discuss several things. If you have something for the agenda, please give it to Janet TODAY.

Scripture Readers are needed at Deer Creek. You don’t have to be a “perfect” reader—the scripture is provided in advance, so you can practice. Training can be provided. Sign up on the clipboard. Please consider serving God in this way.

Summer camp brochures are available! Friends, Fun, Faith…learn about God in the outdoors while having a fabulous time! Camps for all interests and all ages, including families. Scholarships are available. Talk to Bonnie for details.

There is an on-going calendar for sign-ups to help with Centre UMC’s food pantry, so that we don’t overwhelm them with volunteers. Sign up once, or once per month! We’ve already sent several people. Can’t make it out? Food items that are especially needed are: baked beans, cereal, canned fruit, spaghetti/sauce, “goodies” (cookies, pudding, brownies, etc.). Location: Deer Creek.

The money donated to the Magic Jar this month will go to help provide gift cards for replacement blinds at the women and children’s shelter, Susannah Wesley House, in Baltimore. This is a mission of the Deborah Circle of the UMW. Talk to Nancy with questions. Brochures are available next to the jar. Location: Mt. Tabor.

Worship Fun Fact!

Each Sunday during Lent is considered a “mini-Easter” and is reason to celebrate! If you are fasting from something during Lent, you can “break fast” on Sundays and the somber nature of Lent can be tempered by the joyful expectation of the Resurrection.
