Gettin’ High (Sunday, 5 June 2011)

Welcome back to the Deer Creek Charge! We’re so glad that you are here! We apologize for not getting a post up last week–it was crazy around here. Our pastor and lay representative spent several days at the Baltimore Washington Annual Conference (a big meeting of clergy and non-clergy-types from our geographical area in the United Methodist Church who get together once per year to worship, celebrate, network, commission/ordain new clergy, deal with legislation, etc.). As a result, we were behind on website/blog updates. But never fear! We are back on here!

This week in worship we have the blessing and opportunity to share in Holy Communion with one another. ALL are welcome at God’s table, so long as you earnestly repent of your sins and seek to grow in love and fellowship with Jesus Christ. This table is not Deer Creek Charge’s table, the United Methodist’s table or anyone else’s. It is GOD’S table. And you are welcome here. Come and feel the love and grace of God (grace is the unearned, undeserved gift of God’s love and mercy that is freely available for all–we can choose to accept or reject it…if you want to know more, leave a message, email us or stop by for worship…our pastor would LOVE to talk with you about receiving and accepting God’s grace in your life). Come to the communion table. (In case you are worried or curious, we use grape juice, which is the unfermented fruit of the vine…aka non-alcoholic wine…so that more people can participate. We use regular bread that the pastor hands to each person–she washes her hands first–and then you dip the bread into a cup–called a “chalice”–of juice and eat both together. This way, fewer germs are spread, but we all share one cup and one loaf).

This Sunday, our sermon title is “Gettin’ High” and is focused on Acts 1:1-11, which is the Ascension of Jesus. This means that Jesus was raised up from heaven without dying again. Curious about what this has to do with life in 2011?? Come and find out how this really IS relevant to us here and now. At Mt. Tabor, we are excited to welcome several guest musicians to help lead us in worship! Catherine Noonan will be accompanying us on flute and piano, and Kim Streett will be providing a vocal solo for our anthem. Join us as we welcome them for the day!

Also, next Sunday is Pentecost Sunday! It’s the birthday of the Church! Come join us for a celebration of the Holy Spirit coming to the first believers and the growth of the early Church! In honor of this day, we are encouraging worshipers to wear red, orange and yellows to worship (the traditional colors of Pentecost). Also, in celebration of the growth of the early Church, we will be receiving into membership 11 new people at Deer Creek! We are so excited! Join us as we welcome these people as official members! If you are interested in joining (first time profession of faith, baptism, transfer of membership or reaffirmation of your faith after a long time away, please contact us…we’d love to walk with you on this journey!) Be sure to check out the announcements for more on this.

May the Lord bless you and keep you [this week]. May the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace (Numbers 6:24).

Announcements:

NEXT SUNDAY we will be celebrating Pentecost—the birthday of the early Church when the Holy Spirit came to the followers like tongues of fire. You are invited to wear “hot” colors that day—reds, oranges, yellows.

Next SUNDAY we are welcoming new members at Deer Creek! If you are joining this day, please be sure to fill out the information sheet (see Bonnie) and arrive at church NO LATER THAN 8:45am so that we can meet briefly about how the service will work.

Don’t forget the on-going food drives at both Deer Creek and Mt. Tabor! Even when we go away for the summer, hunger does not go away. Please remember to bring in your non-perishable items.

If you would like to donate to the relief and recovery efforts after the tornadoes in the South or in Missouri, you can donate
through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). Make checks payable to “BW Conference Treasurer” with “UMCOR Advance #3021326—Spring Storms” in the memo line. Place it in the offering plate.

Summer camp brochures are available! Friends, Fun, Faith…learn about God in the outdoors while having a fabulous time! Camps for all interests and all ages, including families. Scholarships are available. Talk to Bonnie for details., grab a brochure, or go online to www.bwccampsandretreats.org.

Worship Fun Fact! We are still in the Easter Season! Ascension Day is the fortieth day after Easter (always on a Thursday). We celebrate Ascension Sunday on the 7th (last) Sunday of Easter.
