Be Prepared! (Sunday, 4 December 2011)

Welcome back to the Deer Creek Charge! We’re so glad to see you! As a kid, my favorite Disney movie was The Lion King. I was shocked as a high school student to learn that this movie was really based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet. And I thought I didn’t LIKE Shakespeare…go figure. One of the most heart-pumping songs in this movie is “Be Prepared” when the hyennas and Scar are conversing about killing Mufasa. They were getting ready and prepared for a change of reigns and a new era to be ushered in. They were dreaming about the future. You can check out a Youtube video of this scene here (the song begins at about minute 2).

Now, while I’m not advocating that you go out and act like them (please don’t kill anyone!), I think there is something that can be learned from this song and scene in the movie that speaks to the time of year we are in–Advent. We are preparing for Christmas and waiting and watching for a new era when Christ will break into the world in a mighty way. So come on out and explore this with us on Sunday! The sermon is called “Be Prepared” and is based on Mark 1:1-8 and Isaiah 40:1-11. Let’s “prepare the way of the Lord” together!

We’ll also be sharing in Holy Communion, lighting the Advent wreath, singing some “extra” songs, and praising God. After worship at Deer Creek, be sure to hang around to help the kids make some cards for our neighbors that we’ll be visiting in 2 weeks (Dec. 18) when we go caroling! If you’ve always wanted to join us for something but aren’t sure about coming to worship, this is a great way to get involved…no commitment…just singing a few songs followed by cookies and hot drinks! If you are interested, let us know ahead of time, or just show up (details below).

Don’t forget to join us for worship for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day! You are ALWAYS welcome!

Board of Childcare Red Stockings to help needy children are DUE TODAY. Write your name on the stocking if you would like to receive “credit” as part of your church contributions. Place the filled stocking in the offering plate.

Christmas Cards and Caroling! TODAY, please stay for a few minutes after church and help our children make cards to give to our neighbors. On Sunday, Dec. 18, join us at 2:45 (start walking at 3) for some caroling. Start at Deer Creek, go as far as we can. We’ll finish up back at church for some hot drinks to celebrate! ALL are invited (please invite friends/family!). Baked goods (due in church Dec. 18), a driver, volunteer to set up drinks at church, and wagons needed. Please sign up! Questions/want to help? See Tammy.

Deborah Circle will be collecting money in a designated jar through Dec. 11 to buy new “emergency” clothes for the nurses/students at Hickory & Forest Hill Elementary Schools. Also, the women will be collecting new winter clothing items for their Hat and Mitten Tree. Items such as winter hats, mittens, gloves, scarfs, winter socks and long underwear are needed. These items will go to needy adults and children in the area. Collection runs through the 18th of Dec. Location: Mt. Tabor.

Worship Fun Fact! We are in the church season called “Advent,” which is a season of 4 weeks (including Sundays) leading up to Christmas. It comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” and helps us to prepare for the coming of Christ.
