Compelled to Carry the Gospel (Sunday, 17 June 2012)

Thanks for stopping by the Deer Creek Charge! We are so glad you came! Last week, Guest Preacher Lemuel Dominguez reminded us of God’s faithfulness and provision even in times of transition. This week, Guest Preacher, James McSavaney will bring us a message based on 1 Samuel 15:34-16:13, entitled “Compelled to Carry the Gospel.” This passage is about how David was selected by God to be the next King of Israel. It’s a great story, and sure to be an even better message! Join us on this Father’s Day as we celebrate and honor all the men in our lives, and support James as he brings us God’s Word in our time of transition from one pastor to another.

James McSavaney is our guest preacher today! James’ heritage is British, although he grew up in Georgia. He originally came to Maryland to go to college at St. Mary’s College of Maryland (where he and our out-going pastor, Bonnie, hung out). James started his seminary career at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, GA, and transferred to Wesley Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in May. He is pursuing ordination in the UMC. James is married to Amy, and they live in DC.

Worship Fun Fact! Father’s Day is observed each year the third Sunday in June. It honors all fathers. It was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington in 1910 (BOW 441). Many churches expand this idea and celebrate “Men’s Day” on this Sunday to honor ALL men in our lives—not just those who are biological fathers (they have a similar practice for women on Mother’s Day). Let’s honor ALL men in our congregation today—they add so much to our worship experiences, church life, and understanding of God. Thanks be to God for men!
