Being Undignified on August 12, 2012

At the beginning of the summer, way back in June, guest preacher James McSavoney and our very own David Moore preached on King David’s beginnings, about how David, the youngest of his brothers, was anointed by God as the next king of Israel. We also heard the well-loved story of David and Goliath. For the next three weeks we are returning to the story of David, both his rise and fall as king.

This week we will be looking at David’s dancing with all his might before the altar of God. What moves you to dance like no one is watching? What has God done in your life that can make you move with such joy? I found this image, and even though it may not be a typical church website picture, I just thought it was beautiful and wanted to share it with you!

Let’s all be a little undignified this week like King David. Image by Todd Goehner.

Help feed the Homeless at the Day Shelter (New Hope UMC, Edgewood) on the 3rd FRIDAY (MT) and 4th MONDAY (DC) of each month Next: August 17 (MT) and August 27 (DC). We usually meet at each church around 11ish. We need people to make, deliver, and serve food.

Knit/Crochet No experience needed-will teach! Make scarves for the homeless or prayer shawls. Meets every other Friday at 7pm at Mt. Tabor. Next Meeting: August 24.

Don’t forget the on-going food drives at both Deer Creek and Mt. Tabor!

Let’s Pound the Pastor! Sometime in August (soon! we promise), we will have a pounding of the pastor, where we bring a pound of flour/sugar/etc. to welcome Shannon and Aaron. Shannon would love to have you see the parsonage, so keep your eyes peeled for the date!

Bible Study will start up again this fall. In worship at the end of August, we will send out a sign up sheet to see what times and dates work for folks as well as what topics people are interested in. If you have a particular interest, please let Shannon know!

Blessing of the Backpacks will be on September 2! ALL students (any age!), teachers, aides, schools, buses, bus drivers, parents an anyone else involved with education are welcome to come forward to receive a personal prayer on this day, and children are encouraged to bring their backpacks!

Homecoming at Mt. Tabor will be on September 16. As you know, we will have combined worship at 11 am at Mt. Tabor followed by a potluck luncheon. Rev. Ed Heydt will be preaching! Invitations will go out later this month, but spread the word!

September and October are going to be busy months of worship together! Pray for us, and get excited!

Weekly Devotion: Read Psalm 30.
O God,
sustain us in the complexity of our humanity as you sustained David–
playing the harp of youth, throwing stones at giant problems,
loving our friends beyond wisdom,
dancing worship,
mourning children, breaking our hearts in psalms, and
longing for warmth in our old bones. Amen. (From the Vanderbilt Divinity Library)
