Esther: For Such a Time as This

Esther only comes around once in the three year cycle of readings that most of us mainline preachers use. It, like Ruth which we will be looking at the next two weeks, is a short book. It is not your typical Book of the Bible, if there is such a thing: “it has no mention of Jerusalem, the law, prophets, the Promised Land or exile, or even God. [It is one of the two books of the bible that do not mention God. The other? Song of Songs.] It includes no formal prayers or miracles, though does depict fasting as a pious practice. Its only internal tie to the rest of the Hebrew Bible is that it involves the survival of the Jewish people, crucial enough…”(Amy Oden, Working Preacher http://www.workingpreacher.org/preaching.aspx?lect_date=9/30/2012)

And yet, the book of Esther has a crucial message for us in the midst of hurricanes, in the midst of elections. It encourages us, too, to stand up and bring in God’s kingdom in such  time as this. So come join us, come learn the story of Esther, come eat and celebrate with us!
